It is the process of optimizing a site for users who use search engines. Seo is about optimising a site to give Google what it wants and at the same time, meeting the requirements and the intent of a specific search engine visitor.

Seo is a long-term time investment. It is about more than just html, it is about conversion optimization, site architecture and optimizing the user experience. Seo is not that difficult, simply understand what the factors of SEO are and work on them. If done incorrectly, however, it pushes search result quality down and artificially inflates junk. Seo is an important part of any marketing plan and mix, only if done correctly and without trying to cheat the system.

Seo isn’t going anywhere and will always be a part of the bigger picture, just as is affiliate marketing and ppc. It is not a one time quick fix, it is a weekly maintenance program and if done right can generate a ton of business for any company. It is about relevance. Although unlikely to happen, it is very volatile and the search engines can change their formula and drop your website on a dime.

Seo is a key factor in the marketing goal of attracting possible buyers and is used to improve the traffic to a website by using search engines and links from different pages. It is a great selling point for website design companies .

Seo is needed to have a successful blog or website. It is an art and not a scientific formula. Seo should be used as a successful tool to increase webpage rankings. It is mostly about the publishing and marketing strategy that comes out of keyword research. Seo is an investment of time and effort and not an Improvisation. You really have to be committed to SEO to make it work.

The Power of Article Marketing for Search Engine Ranking

How do you achieve great search engine ranking results in 30 days with article marketing? This is a popular question for those who are new to this type of marketing.

There might be a lot of confusion when getting started in article marketing. You may be doing what you think is appropriate, and you’re going to search early on for results from your hard work in the beginning the campaign. But posting three or four articles isn’t enough to expect any kind of real results.

The simple truth is that it’s unrealistic to anticipate substantial results in 30 days with your article marketing through publishing a handful of content articles. Do not let this get you down. You are not on the wrong track here, you simply need to do more of this.

Results take time. It is likely to take 4 to 6 weeks before you see your ratings improve from your hard work, whether you are using article promotion or some other technique. The reason for this is because the various search engines take time to evaluate your website and determine your own ranking with it. It may actually take longer if your website is new, so unwind and concentrate on the high quality and relevancy of the articles you add on it and backlink to it. This is whether your website is about "work from home"or "how to find the perfect locum doctor job ".

Consistency is key. You will have to submit articles regularly over a period of time in order to have an impact on your research engine ranking. Posting a small number of articles isn’t enough to impact search engine rankings. Try to publish at least 10 to 20 content articles a month every month for every website that you are advertising. Try to do this on a consistent basis and you will obtain the excellent results that you are looking for.

Use long-tailed keywords. Always add keywords in the title, body and anchor text of the article in order to optimize search engine ranking for your keyword term.

If you are just starting out in article marketing, you might not be getting the results you would like in just one month with your campaign. Don’t be concerned about it at this stage, keep a clear head. Keep writing and submitting articles consistently over time and you will see the dramatic improvement inside your sites ranking. You might see more quick results but sadly that’s not how marketing with articles works in general.

Marketing's Role In Times Of Recession

Marketing used to be the weapon that makes profits for you - not the marketing itself but the general impression that its means creates among the public. Now it seems that the marketing is something much bigger than that - marketing is not only a method of increasing the sales, but also the only way to have sales at all. And what happens with marketing nowadays when the times have changed, when in times of recession everyone buys less and producers offer more. This is a question of many answers, but the logical explanation is easy to make - marketing is rapidly evolving and we can see that. We can easily trace every slide and minor change in the marketing industry because we witness changes happening around us with the speed of light. Nowadays, whether you have Audi for sale or second hand cookers for sale, marketing is there to help you out.In times of recession, marketing evolves constantly - take a look at the way companies are attracting customers these days - they offer exclusive deals, reduce prices, make huge and amazing advertisements, employ more people in the marketing division of their firm and fire those from the production. It is all marketing and it is all aimed to increase the rate of sales and make the company in question well positioned on the market. On the other hand, the general impression about marketing has dramatically changed - in 2010 there were more people willing to start a marketing course than any other year before. This highlights the public opinion that truly marketing sells not only the product but also can sell itself by being practised as a profession. An interesting notion among the society that once again confirms that the marketing industry is advancing in times of recession and that soon, if the financial environment remains the same, it might be as desired as the well-known top jobs of being a lawyer or a doctor.

How To Maintain Your Website's Search Position

Online business is a challenge that if done correctly can brings in huge profits. How do you optimise your internet marketing to make your site higher on search engine results lists and not your competitor? The key to this optimisation is finding out what your competitors are doing successfully and how to apply these successes to your own website. This is done through a competitor analysis.

Conducting a competitor analysis will allow you to determine what drives traffic to certain websites and not others. You can conduct the analysis on your own or higher a specialised private detective to delve deeper than you can.

Some of the problems you have on your website may not be apparent at first glance. You may look at your own work and believe changes aren’t necessary; however, after you conduct an analysis of what your competitors are doing, you may find a few surprises about your own work. This is especially true when it comes to search engine optimisation.

When you set out to conduct an analysis of your competitors, there are a few things you should look at. Take a look at how your competitor’s syntax for title tags, and are they uniform? When you search, it is a good idea to pay attention to the keywords, and determine if they appear in these title tags. You should also keep an eye open for nofollow tags. These tags allow for balanced Page Rank throughout the website. This is a sure sign that your competitor is using an established search engine optimisation (SEO) writer or firm.

Also what kind of marketing are they doing? It could be that they are marketing in areas that you are not. Pay attention to the kinds of advertisements they are using and the structure of the advertisement.

Pay close attention also to what makes them different for you and your product or service. The differences may not be much but its there.

By conducting a competitor analysis, you will be able to understand what lengths they have gone to make their websites so successful in terms of search engine rankings. By capitalising on their successes, you may well find yourself on the top of results lists.
If you want to look at a page I have come across with great onsite optimisation, have a look at the web design for this hr management software website and I must admit in my web designer opinion it is not only very pretty, but really quite practical as well.

Email Marketing: What Your Email Design Should Not Be

Email design may seem like a straight forward endeavour, with very little to consider prior to creation. However, there are plenty of mistakes that web designers make every day, and they are usually very simple to avoid. A little common sense and a little forethought will make the difference between an eye catching yet effective email, and an eye catching but bothersome email. Here are a few things to avoid when designing an email for marketing purposes.

1. Avoid pictures and logos at the top of the email. Although a web designer may be tempted to put the logo on the top of the page so that your audience can see it immediately, this should be avoided. Since most “preview panes” allow for very little information at once, you do not want to bog down your audience and force them to scroll down to see the actual message. You need to catch the audience immediately, and this is done by giving the vital information first and then your logo at the end.

2. Avoid graphics. Most graphics are blocked automatically by the email clients. This means that most customers will not see the graphics you want them to, so you might as well not use them.

3. No vital information in your graphics. Since your audience will likely not see the graphics since they will be blocked, you must never put vital information within these graphics. They will simply go unseen. Include your vital information of your message into the main content of your email; you do not need to spice up your offers/coupons by putting them into graphics. The power of your offer will entice your customers on its own.

By following these steps, you will easily reach your target audience and they will effectively receive your message and act upon it

Windows Phone 7 Series: A Brave New World From Microsoft?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0SSZSyKHhgU/S4ZxhJ0NgSI/AAAAAAAAAIs/can276npslk/s200/MobilePhones.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442162014108352802" />

The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona witnessed the launch of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Series, which is a total revamp of Windows Mobile. Stylus and pull-down menus are out, as this touchscreen version allows you to touch ‘tiles’ that can be tapped, swiped, and rearranged. To add to the experience there are slick animated menus designed on the lines of Zune HD. The first set of WP7 phones is likely to hit the markets soon.

Representatives from Microsoft held demos of the WM7 where no specific handsets were announced. The demos were held on prototype hardware. Most likely, a series of handsets are likely to run the Windows Mobile 7 OS. The major U.S. carriers have given a commitment to offering WP7 handsets, while AT&T has geared up to provide the software and services for the new phones.

Although there were no handsets at the demo, the public got more than a glimpse of the WM7 interface, which is a vast difference from Windows Mobile 6. The home screen is divided into a list of applications on one side and a series of ‘live tiles’ that display email count, text messages, contacts, Facebook updates, on the other side. Tiles can be added, rearranged, or deleted as per your convenience.

Another amazing feature is that your phone content can be divided in six ‘hubs’ with Windows Mobile 7. Contacts, pictures, games, music and video, marketplace for certified apps, and Office are all neatly arranged. Hardware buttons included beneath the screen are Start, Search, and Back. Based on the demo the touch UI looks impressive. The software has the ability to recognize addresses in incoming emails and converts them into hotlinks on Microsoft’s Bing Maps location system. You can use the onscreen Qwerty keyboard with support for the multitouch function which is similar to Windows 7 for PCs.
Just before I go I want to ask you all for a bit of help, a friend of mine has recently started an online editing services business and was desperately looking for ways to reach out to her clients. This will be much different from submitting your website to a search engine.

You should begin by doing some research into the many topic categories available and chose the one that best fits what your website is all about. In choosing the right category for your website it is best to do a search of the main keyword phrase you are targeting and check out the categories that are related to it.

Pay attention to the listed websites and from that opt for a category you consider seriously related or very relevant to the content in your website. There are a number of directories that have category descriptions that are very specific and you will do well to read them prior to any submission. This will ensure that the topic you have for your website is the most relevant. Keep in mind that your competitors will be listed in a category that will also be relevant to your website.

When you have chosen a directory and a category you will need to give information about your website which has to be very detailed. Your contact information, company details, and content information will also need to be provided.

It is sometimes useful to vary the website description before you submit it (for example using both the terms ’permanent vet jobs' and ’full time vet jobs’). This way you will be able to keep track of the effectiveness of each description in terms of traffic to the website. You can also gauge the number of click each description brings.

It is important that the details of your website are accurate and relevant. So do your best to promote your websites benefits for those who visit. The uniqueness of your website should be highlighted and made evident.

Internet Marketing and Successful Advertising

Internet marketing is a key to running a successful business. A good online marketing plan can help you reach your target audience and make the most of your business.

The Internet can connect you to billions of people within a few minutes. It also allows businesses to promote themselves on a large scale.

Get some training

Internet marketing is totally different to conventional marketing, there are different rules and applications that you need to follow. This will not come easily though and you will have to invest a lot of time and possibly money in internet marketing before you master it and use it successfully to promote your business. Having good knowledge about how it works is crucial to effectively implement things such as article marketing and search engine optimization strategies. Learning to do things the right way will give you control over your online business, especially if you are new to the industry.

Understand your target market

Understanding your target market is very important if you want to deliver a good deal to your prospective clients. Having a good idea of the demographics of people who are likely to make a purchase can help you mould a marketing plan that is right for them. Good strategies will often make the target market feel that they need the product. Your understanding of the target market will either make or break your business.

Be very honest

By being honest you can be the best from the rest in the online world. You should be honest in whatever you do and whatever you sell. Put the spotlight on the needs of your customers and deliver above and beyond what you promise every single time. You might make quick money by being dishonest, but it will not help you sustain the business in the long term.
Just before I go I need advice from all my internet savey mates my cousin has recently started an online book binding business and was looking for ways to keep up with her contacts Since she redesigned her site, her mailing list has doubled within an incredably short period of time and she has been looking into email marketing software, does anyone know a good site who do this for online businesses for a good price?

Does Social Media Affect SEO

Social media has been the ‘big thing’ on the internet in the last few years. It has grown so rapidly that it has even stunned many experts. Social networking has had a huge impact on our lives and one area of that has been affected by Social media is search engine optimisation or SEO for short.

Those in the SEO industry spend a lot of time trying to find new methods to optimize websites, and get higher search engine rankings. Getting good search engine rankings require a lot of marketing on the part of SEO consultants and website owners. The marketing strategies involve things such as press releases or blog articles. Social media has changed the way SEO consultants optimise websites by proving new and exciting avenues.

The web community has changed in the past few years. Users of the Internet spend a lot of their time on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter than they do in other areas. This allows search engine marketers to make full use of the exposure this medium provides. Most SEO companies have several social networking accounts of their own which allows them to publish their information quickly and reach their targeted audience.

Content writing has taken on a new dimension with the rise of social media. People have new ways of finding interesting content through new avenues such as Tweets and other updates by their online contacts. These new methods of finding content means SEO consultants have to make sure their content is compatible with the new media. Proper compatibly will also lead to people doing some of the marketing by passing content around. This is vital for marketers as one person who likes the content can create a large chain of people sharing content

SEO is constantly changing to keep up with new trends on the internet. Using social media wisely is just one step SEO consultants can take to make sure they reach their intended markets.
Before I go, I am attempting to sort something for my aunt as a gift. When I was talking with her the other week she said that she would like a new running watch. Here are six tips to making sure your newsletter looks professional.

Make Your Newsletter easy to read.

Studies have shown that most readers like to skim or partially read newsletters. Only a small percentage prefers to completely read it and an equally number will never open it. You can make you newsletter easy to read by keeping your paragraphs short, using bullet points, allow for appropriate spacing between topics, and use uppercase or bold text to highlight topics.

Put the title of your newsletter in the subject field

When you send out your newsletter make sure that the title is in the subject field. This assists the reader to tell your newsletter apart from the other junk emails you may receive.

Put in a Table of Content

A table of content allows readers to go scanning for topics they are most interested in. It is best to place it at the top part of the newsletter.

Make sure your Long links work

Sometime when emails are formatted the long hyperlinks end up being broken. You will have to edit any links manually to make sure they work properly.

Use HTML to design your newsletter

It is more effective to format your HTML in such a way that the newsletter appears well on the screen and is easily read.

Make sure you spell check your newsletter

It is important that you spell check your newsletter for any errors both grammatical and otherwise. Use the spell-check on your computer and you should also do a manual check because most spellchecking software will not catch all grammatical errors. No one likes to read anything that has a lot of errors and it is deemed unprofessional. So spend the time to do it right.
On another note I am going to ask you all for a bit of advice, a friend of mine has recently started an online paper and stationary business and was really searching for ways to keep in touch with her client base Since she has started online, her mailing list has doubled within an incredably short period of time and she has been looking into email marketing software, does anyone know a good company who do this for start-up businesses for a good price?

Finding Good SEO Services.

When you are going to use someone’s services you want to be sure that they are going to do things properly and not rip you off. I hope the below items help you in some way!

1) Identify your keywords:

When users type their search requirements into a search engine (such as Google or Yahoo!), they will tend not too specific at first - this is mostly because they do not know what they are after.

For example, if they live in London and are looking for Search Engine Optimisation help then they might enter:

London SEO - which results in nearly 14,000,000 possible websites

The first result I found when I searched this search criteria did not seem particularly relevent - not very helpful!

Making search criteria more specific helps bring down the number of results and filters out anything that that might be irrelevent. The user has decided that they would like the services of a search engine optimisation 'company' in London:

London SEO company - which now results in roughly 700,00

The use of the place 'London' ensures search engines make there results much more localised in comparisson to the whole world!

Given the problems with users and searches described above - to make sure you get people visiting your website you need to carefully analyse exactly what your website does, for, promoting and/or services it provides to discover your keywords.

This activity could actually be a very good Team building exercise. Say your company sell vending machines, get a group together and start off with the main theme. In this case it is obvious: a "Vending machine" - remember, don't forget the plural: "Vending machines" next you could state you are company status like so: "Vending machine company". This stems off into an endless wealth of different variations ("Vending operator" or "vending consumables")...

2) Page Layout/Formatting and Navigation:

This section is really all about where you have information on the page, what is looks like and how easy it is to find.

Page layout it a very complicated process. You want to show information in a pleasing way and often what we think is pleasing is the complete opposite for others. What I would suggest is the K.I.S.S strategy of: "Keep it Simple Stupid". Keep the navigation separate, do not have annoying pop-ups that interupt a users' experience of your website and stay away from putting too much text of the screen - chance are that it will not be read in that state - try and simplify it if at all possible.

Titles, Headings, Bullets, Tables are also affected by page layout and where they appear on the page is very important in terms of how much weight they are given by the search engine.

Formatting is how you have highlighted different sections such as whether text is bold/italic/coloured/combinations/fonts... what colours are in place in tables with what boarders and cell sizes.

Navigation is how easy is it to reach all pages of your site. A search engine will measure this from your homepage and a standard rule is that all pages should be accessible within 3 clicks. Another problem that programmers fall into is that they use JavaScript menus. These are invisible to a search engine. If you are insistant on using these then please ensure that you include a smaller, standard HTML text version at the bottom of the screen. The reason for this is that you may have used many of your keywords within your menu structure and this would be pointless unless search engines can see this...

I hoped that clarified these two main sections of Web Design and Search Engine Optimisation.

The Power of Outbound Linking in SEO

For those not familiar with the term; ‘outbound linking’ means placing links on your own site, which point to other websites. We all understand the power of inbound links, which help to classify and raise the search rank of your website in relation to its direct competition, but the power of outbound linking is often overlooked when we set about optimizing our website for search engines.

Just like inbound links, which suggest an individual’s confidence in the quality of content on your website, outbound links allow you to demonstrate your own confidence in the quality of content on a rival’s website. Sounds like a bad idea? Not when you factor in the power of popularity by association. Your website might not be the biggest or the best, but if it’s linking to sites with high page ranks it’ll be significantly easier for search engines to categorize and rank your site based upon the content of the popular sites you are linking to.

You can be even smarter with it too. Say you have a website which sells local groceries by delivery, quietly linking to national super market websites won’t affect your own custom, but it will tell the search engines exactly what type of service you are providing. To the search engine, your service is now associated with national food retail and becomes a priority entry whenever a customer does a search for something like ‘local produce’.

This popularity by association technique can be applied to almost any business; tattoo removal, corporate team building events organisers, car insurance, and so on. The key is to create outbound links to very large websites which provide similar services to the ones you are selling!

Give it a try on your own website! You can set up a page which you either publicise or keep quiet, but be sure to include a good handful of outbound links to relevant or competing websites, see how long it takes before that link page is mysteriously ranked more highly than other relevant pages of your site. You’ll be amazed at the power of outbound linking.

Top Ten Ways To Optimize Your Site For Search Engines

Make sure to include a descriptive title on your page. The title of the page should be repeated or included in a relevant way within your site or page.

Your meta keywords should be relevant to your site and used throughout the site. For example, if one of your keywords is “seo <city st="on">london</city>”, you should have relevant articles or paragraphs using this word in your site. A good way to utilize this tag would be to have an article all about SEO London.

Utilize the spider tags such as meta content="all" name="robots". This lets the search engine no that they should crawl your site and the links contained within.

Your meta description should be related to your site content.Key words and phrases in your description should be used throughout your site.

Images, movies, and Flash cannot be read by the search engine without proper description tags. Be sure to include relevant and descriptive “alt” tags on all of your media, so they relate to your content.

Store scripts (such as javascript) externally. These can cause messy searches, so it is better to utilize external script linking.

Link to other relevant and highly rated sites. Generic links such as yahoo.com or google.com will not cause much of a boost to your ranking. Try to find other resources related to your site’s content and link to them.

Try to start a link exchange with related sites. If ranked sites link back to you, this helps your ranking. It is best to contact the admin of these sites and ask if they would like to start a link exchange. But, make sure to live up to your end of the bargain.

Stay under the limits! Some search engines have problems with more than 100 URLs per page and very large sites. Also, some search engines have limits on the number of characters in each meta tag. Research these specific numbers and ensure that your site is within the requirements.

Use a meta tag analyzer to check the relevancy of all of your meta tags. Even free analyzers can do a pretty thorough job of giving you advice based on your current site makeup.

Pay for click vs Organic SEO. What is PPC and how does it compares to Organic optimisation?

In today's modern world, in order to become successful in any business, you have to use the internet to become known. Without doing so, you would not be able succeed as well as if you were to do so. Whether it is joining a PPC company or Organic SEO, using any of these is extremely helpful and beneficial to your business.

PPC stands for "pay per click". The "per click" part stands for the amount of clicks an ad is clicked on during the ads time on a website that accepts ads. This could mean that during someones online session, they were interested in your ad's content and decided to give it a shot and see further details of you announcement. This is a good idea, at least from what I would say in my my opinion. When activating your ad in a pay per click company and deciding to do so, you will not have to pay for every second your ad exists online in cyberspace. You will only have to pay a certain amount depending on the number of clicks your ad received. However, the amount of money that you pay depends on what you decided with the company.

Similar to PPC, there is also SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This also has to do with placing ads on the internet. This is this process of entering your advertising in search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, etc. By doing so, the number of visits for your ad increases tremendously for literally millions of people use these on a day to day basis. Meaning that your ad will be seen by millions more by SEO 'ing than if you were to not do so.

You may like on more than the other. Nevertheless, they are both extremely good ways to boost the visit number to your ad, site, business, etc. In addition, you will not have to bother with all those banner stands you need to put up along with your sign. Whichever way you think about... or whichever method you choose, both are a great contribution to boosting those visits!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://seomusings.blogspot.com/2008/09/pay-for-click-vs-organic-seo-what-is.html' title='Pay for click vs Organic SEO. People use directory entries, they rent or buy links from private sellers on the internet, they make link exchanges. I would like to take a moment to comment on using forum posts as a link building method.
Forum post firstly are quite easy to do. If you go to a forum where you genuinely have an opinion to share, you can generally make posts quite quickly and easily. If it is in a forum where you understand what is being discussed and you genuinely want to comment, none of your posts will be flagged as spam because you really do have an opinion to share. So how does chatting about things you want to talk about help you build links?

Well, once you have made a certain amount of posts – and this does differ from forum to forum – you are allowed to add signatures. A signature is a sign off that automatically appears at the base of each and every post that you make, and you signature can contain live links. What this means is that you can have a signature that is a sentence containing several live links to sites that you would like to link to. For example, your signature may read “My pages include smart lipo, hair restoration and roller banners.”

What this means is that every time you make a post to a forum, you are in fact plugging your own website! This can work very well.

The main thing you have to watch out for is indexing. Some forum sections are not indexed, and others are indexed but do not stay in the engines for very long. So whilst the links are easy to build, they may not last long enough depending on how long it takes you to write each post.

SEO comments help!

One of the latest link building fads seem to be commenting on peoples blogs. Now personally I think this is a good idea, everyone seems to be a winner, blog want reader, SEO want link from multiple different blogs. Everyones happy. (It does tend to create a whole loads of complete rubbish conversation completely built to get post by hay no victims there)

Comment writing (nearly called it spamming there) need to be done in a very certain way to work. Here are my top tips:

Make sure the blog Do Follows the links: recently they has been somethign called the Do follow movement where people are declaring and advertising there blogs as Do follow. This means that they have actually turned off the no follow function on the blogs. These ones are great they will actually be counted in the search engines.

Make sure the blog is well indexed: The thing about blogs is the post tend to disappear fairly quickly depending on how frequently they are posted to, so you really want to post on a blog which is going to be index quite depply to make sure that your efforts are not wasted.

Comment on new posts: don't bother looking for old posts with good PR or anything. Get the new fresh posts as soon as they appear for a number of reasons, firstly your comment will appear at the top this means that their is a much higher chance that generic people will click through, secondly the search engines may not bother to reindex old posts after they have visited a post twice and it doesn't seem to have changed much they probable won't bother to update the index again. These means they will probably not take you link into consideration.

Look for blog with Comment Luv installed: Why get only one link to your homepage, when you can get a second link to your latest post all together with the anchor text the same as your blog post title. Yes there is a word press plugin that places a permentant deep link to the last blog post you have posted on a blog. This doubles the amount of links you get better links to. Look out for these guys, when they are Do followed too they are gold dust.

Put some effort into your comments: This may some simple but it's very important, on all these blogs there is a human that you need to get by to get your comment accepted. Read the actual post comment interelectally, ask questions add to the debate. Don't just do 'Wow what great post, check out my blog...' This will get deleted.

Think about your anchor text: Personally I never use anything but the anchor text that is relevant to the name of the site I'm linking to. this massively increases the chances of the link getting accepted, I storngly recommend you do the same.

Having said that all I just want to do a quick mshout out to a couple of my friend in the web world please check out Corporate Team Building and cyst removal. It does not feel Christmassy. Maybe due to the fact that our household has not put up any decorations, yet. Or maybe as I am feeling too cynical about the whole season known as Christmas. But one thing that does get me in the Xmas mood are mince pies. No matter how pre-packaged or how home made they come, everyone loves mince pies. Generous relatives who can actually make them, shops that spit them from a factory or even a bakery that is in the festive spirit.

Of course today was the occasion of the first (two) mince pie(s) of the season and my, it tasted wonderful.

Ho, ho, yum!

The mince pie is a tradition that I absolutely love. And I think anyone who has experienced the British climate in and around December would have to agree. There is nothing more fulfilling that a gently warmed mince pie sinking to the bottom of your stomach topped with cream, caramel or custard. Mmm. Or how about all three for the cholesterol bursting finale of pure joy.

The tastes within the pie itself is a wonder to the palette. Although not very sophisticated, the fact that they are only served once a year makes the mince pie such a sensual dish - an appropriate word for the tastes and textures that hits the tongue.

So enjoy your first mince pies of the Festive Season. Remember that it is good to sin if you are on a diet or going to going to splash out on some Liposuction. After all, with the winds picking up and the nights now filled with frost, that extra layer of ‘cuddle’ is not just comforting for the self but also a vital piece of survival. Well, that’s the way I like to look at it. Enjoy the little delicate pieces of ‘mincemeat’ that fall from the pies as you gobble them up on your way to work. Remember that in a month's time it is back to boring old muffins and croissants. And finally, enjoy the whole aura surrounding the mince pie. For after all, Christmas comes but once a year...

Why Did Google Buy DoubleClick? The Official Google Blog Weighs In

Google's decision to purchase ad agency DoubleClick in a multi-billion deal has been causing tongues to wag in the online industry since the deal was announced in April. Now, the official Google Blog is weighing in with its take on why Google made the decision to purchase the ad serving giant.

Google summarizes its intentions in four points:

1. They can use DoubleClick to improve the advertising experience for all parties.
2. DoubleClick can provide better metrics for Google's advertisers.
3. DoubleClick has the knowledge and experience to work with Google's platform to create more effective online advertising.
4. Google can help DoubleClick publishers make a profit on unsold inventory.

Google claims that teaming with DoubleClick will help to make the search engine's ads more relevant and effective while helping publishers make more of a profit from their websites. Smaller publishers will be on more equal footing with larger competitors, and the entire ad marketplace will be more transparent and earn mroe money.

Web surfers will also have a more positive experience since the ads will be custom tailored to their needs and interests. Meanwhile, advertisers will have a wider range of advertising formats and locations, and will see better performance due to enhanced relevance.

According to Google, this deal is a win-win situation for everyone in the industry. Of course, major competitors like Yahoo and MSN, who are threatened by the increasing advertising real estate under the Google umbrella, might have a different take on the situation.
This entry was written by Emily Dairy, she regularly writes for Fruity Beauty Blog and Harry-nomics. There is a very simple answer to this - click the video!

Just in case you'd prefer to read a more detailed answer rather than watch the simplified answer, I'll also scribe one here.
So, is link building important? Yes is the simple answer. It is very important.
The google algorithm is constantly under review and development, and has and will continue to changing with time. Things that once were considered quite important like defining your keywords in the Meta data – are now considered to be worth less than the time it takes to do them. Helping the search engines index your site is always worth doing – but the methods with which to do them will change over time. That brings us to link building as one of the methods.

Link building looks like one of the elements that will remain effective for years to come. As the search engine’s way of examining and processing sites becomes more dynamic and complex some of the things we do now become defunct and out of date. Most good SEO’s agree that links are here to stay for the coming future. Inbound links are one of the things that remain trusted by the engines. Why?

It’s about what linking ‘says’ about a site. For another website to link to you they have to trust you in some respect or capacity. In some cases you may have paid for the link – but since you can be judged by the people you link out to you still have to draw lines as to who you link to. For example, a respected clothes manufacturer will probably not link out to an adult content site no matter how much they offer to pay. However, they would be more than happy to link out to an appropriate affiliate – perhaps a cloth supplier. A directory of pet insurance sites will of course link out to insurance companies, a pet blog might link out, but childrens toy manufacturer probably wouldn't.

Sites can be judged by the search engines on the people they link out to – so you have to link appropriately or risk having your own site penalised. This is the first of my top three reasons.

Many of most trusted sites cannot be bought off, so if you have inbound links from them it is probably because you deserve to have those links coming in. A government site (.gov) will link out to appropriate sites – sites that they find useful and to be trust worthy. These links cannot be bought – and this is unlikely to change in the near future, another strong reason that link building will stand the test of (relative) time.

The final is that there is nothing else for the search engines to use that can be trusted in a similar way. Giving someone a link is like a positive editorial review, as of yet there is nothing else on offer that can be used to judge this.

So the long and short,

BUILD LINKS to your site

(as they say in the hair adverts) because your worth it!

Using “Lens” as part of social networking

There have been so many “lens” websites that have been set up in recent years, and the question of how to effectively use ‘social networking’ has never really been answered. I discovered an edu (educational website) based at Harvard University called “H20”. It’s aim is to “...represent a new way of thinking about education online.” It basically allows people to post reading lists so that other people interested in the same subject can go straight to relevant information as recommended by the maker of the list.
To be honest, I think it is an excellent idea! So as an experiment to see how it works, I have created a list of something I am interested in. I keep an eye on property as that is where I see my retirement fund ultimately coming from, so I have created a HIP’s reading list here.

As to the outcome within the internet, I have yet to find out, but I suspect that I may have stumbled over a real nice way to add value to the internet whilst creating links to the network I consider my ‘friends’ as it were!

Big verses Small SEO companies when hiring

The hiring of a good SEO is a difficult thing. In any business the decision to hand over money must be based upon a belief that there will be some kind of return. So what are the things to look for in an SEO?

Firstly, do not go straight for the cheapest. I’ve outsourced work and ended up with very little results because I chose a cheaper and therefore less skilled SEO. Having said that the most expensive tend to be the larger companies, and whilst they are good my personal recommendation is to go with a small independent SEO.

So why are smaller companies better than the large corporations?

As a company size increases so does the general expense of running the company. This means the larger companies have to charge you more for the same work, or charge the same but simply do less.

Within a large company, because of the amount of people and the lack of direct contact, they will tend to produce less creative methods of optimising your site.

A good SEO gives great value to any business he works for. In a large company he/she may not feel he is given the credit he deserves and so they often don’t fit into the corporate life>Doing SEO work requires very little more than a couple of decent computers and a credit card. If you were given a choice between spending an hour travelling to a building in the city, where you have to sit in a stuffy office all day before battling your way home on public transport while earning good money, OR working from home where you can have an extra hour in bed, watch television during your lunchtime which you take whenever you feel hungry whilst earning great money (double to triple that of a corporate wage), what would you choose?

For these reasons I truly believe that most of the truly talented and creative SEO work for small independent firms, and I would always chose them over a large corporation.

Please note, I am of course biased as I am a small independent SEO, and your welcome to bare that in mind and discard this advise on that basis. I don’t mind, I’m going to have a little sit in my garden now that its lunchtime!

This entry was written by Steven Wisternoff. Robots.txt is file used to prevent web pages from being indexed by search engines. This may raise an alarm to some as, we know, our primary goal in doing all those SEO hassles is to ensure that “all” our pages are indexed by the search engines and to keep it index all the time. So why prevent our pages from being crawled? Well, the primary reason is that we don’t really want search engines to crawl some of our pages (or directories). Take my case as an example: I own several sites and most of them are dynamic. In order to simplify my work updating these sites, I use a separate part of the site where I can update my contents from time to time. I usually place this into a separate folder, say ‘admin’. Since ‘admin’ is my a private folder, I don’t want Google to be crawling its contents for security reasons. Think of what will happen if people suddenly find a page such as http://www.mysite.com/deletearticles.php in their search results page! That will certainly mean disaster.

In this context, I will have to ban search engines from crawling my admin folder and to prevent displaying my admin pages into the search pages. I can easily accomplish this by creating robots.txt file for my site. A typical robots.txt’ content that will serve my need at this point will look like the one below:

User-agent: *

Disallow: /admin/

This will disallow all search engines from accessing my admin folder thus also preventing files under it from appearing in the search pages. But beware, only disallow folders that you really need not want be indexed. Considering even experts such as Matt can sometimes make simple mistakes using robots.txt.

Till next time!

Site Contents That Can Drive Traffic To Your Site

One of the key pointers in developing search engine-friendly sites is to develop as much quality contents as possible on a regular basis. The more contents and pages you add in your site, the more probability that search engines will find you. Adding contents on a regular basis do not only increases search engine exposure but also attracts more return visitors. “What Are You Learning From Leading Edge SEO Bloggers” gives us some ideas as to what contents may be added in order to expand our site’s contents. Some examples mentioned are online glossary, video and podcast, interviews, live blogs and news articles.

How Larger Contents Benefit Sites
Search engines retrieve search results by comparing keywords specified by the users. Each time a site is crawled, search engines take notes of the site’s contents and ranks it according to it’s relevance to the keyword or keywords being search. Site’s with lots of contents in it has more probability to have those keywords, either deliberately targeted by the webmaster as one of the page’s dominant keywords or even accidental words that are by chance included in the contents.

One thing to consider when putting in contents is to make sure that each article you add to your site appears on its own page. Why? Putting in articles on its own page makes it possible for you to optimize each page to target a specific set of keyword instead of displaying everything on a single page with for a generic keyword in it. Another important thing to remember is to make sure that all your contents, including old ones, remains included in your site. This means maintaining a link pointing to your articles. If your articles piled up especially when you regularly add more contents, don’t delete them, make an archive for your old articles so that search engine can still have reference to them on the next indexing schedule.

Stop Sweatin’ the Duplicate Content Filter

I’ve haven’t seen so much confusion and anxiety about so<personname />Me</personname />Thing since Google’s Big Daddy update. The duplicate content filter is applied to web pages that contain content that has already been indexed on other web pages. This can happen if you have multiple versions of the sa<personname />Me</personname /> Page on your web site or if you use content from other sites on your own web pages.

If the content is already available on another page then it will be difficult to get high rankings for your own web page. If the sa<personname />Me</personname /> Content is available on multiple pages then Google will pick only one of them for the search results. Well search engines caught on and can now detect spammy content like that. SO keyword density is less of a hard and fast rule anymore and more of a guideline.

So, most SEOs like to stay within 3 keyword density. Anything over 10% is considered spammy and probably will keep you out of the first few result pages. There are only two <personname />Me</personname />Ta tags that matter – description and keywords.

1. Description <place />Meta</place /> Tag – This tag is the most important because so<personname />Me</personname /> Engines like MSN and Yahoo actually use your descriptions in their search results so make sure you include them. I’ve even seen Google slip in the description tag as their description in the search results. Include the keywords in there and make it one or two sentences only. The description should sell your page, so people will want to click on it.

2. Keyword Meta Tag – The keyword <personname />Me</personname />Ta tag has lost its importance because people spam<personname />Me</personname />D the engines with this tag putting all sorts of keywords in that didn’t even relate to the page content. So make sure to keep your keywords to a minimum and on point. If you have a page about dog hair grooming then your keywords should include “dog grooming, dog hair grooming” and not much else. <personname />Don</personname />€t use general words in your keyword tag like “dogs”. That’s a waste of digital ink. Say for example if some one links to your page with the word botox' in the link text the search engine presumes that page is relevant to the search term botox'.

	20% History of domain

The longer a domain name has been active on the internet the more trustworthy it seen as.

	20% size of the site

As much as inbound links is a vote for the site, also links from within your own site work the same way but in a slightly less effective.

	10% on page elements

The actually elements on the page for example the text has actually a lot smaller effect than you would expect, especially when the search term is competitive. For example if you type miserable failure' in to google the first thing that comes up is president Bush biog, even though the words miserable and failure don't appear on the page at all.

Ow on a work front.
Tom has finally re-designed the london cosmetic surgery pages

Letter Advising SEO

I wrote a letter I was quite proud of. I was basically asked to review someones SEO stratagy, which was the most vague wishlist I have ever read from a SEO. This was my reply:

Hi

We have looked over the SEO strategy that you have sent us and as much is it does cover everything, it is slightly too vague to be much use to us. What would be more useful is it you would go into specifics about what you actually want for the SEO rather than just summaries the points that we should think about. It is easier if you provide us with your ideal for how the site should be and then we negotiate around your blueprint.

SEO elements

To put in place the SEO elements as mentioned in the document. We will need you to be a lot more specific. You mention things like content, Meta data. These elements really need to come from you. We need you to guide us on which pages are being optimised for which search terms. If you could provide us with either a specific breakdown of what text, links and meta date for each page or provide us with a formula to work with.

The way we are used to working is to have the static pages designing individually and then on the dynamic pages to follow a formula.
Also with links could you be more specific, what links do you want where? A lot of this we have already talk about but having a document of what your desired setup would be, would be really useful.
Traffic reporting:

You have listed a number of reports you would like;

#$#$ visited

#$#$ visited

PPC vs Organic traffic

Entry/exit pages and path through site.

Please could you generate a example of how you would like each of these reports to look and then we will be able to see exactly what you would like to know and be able to spec these more specifically. (an example Excel spread sheet would be perfect.)

You also mention some thinks like consider requirements to set up data feeds for Kelkoo, Position Technology and possible others'. This is quite vague, please could you be more specific, summaries the actually things that you would like us to do.

Google guidelines:

If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.E., the URL contains a "?" character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.

Yes we will be careful to keep the URL similar to the pervious site or where possible shorter.

If your company buys a content management system, make sure that the system can export your content so that search engine spiders can crawl your site.
I'm not quite sure I understand this, could you please rephrases it for me.

I was quite proud of that, not too nasty I though.
On a more positive note.
Check out the design on the sell your home pages

Black hat hits the mainstream

It's seems that the black and white lines are merging again. This is a slightly complicated question, MySpace is a community site and much like all forums, blogging and the like it works in a very similar fashion. Basically the amount that you participate with the community the more exposure you gain.

It throw up a number of problems, firstly a MySpace site would need to be yours about you and all the friends, what you've eaten for lunch. All the blog post would need to be done by you (If not by you then at least it would need to ghost written for you). This would end up taking quite a bit of your time any way we do it.

Secondly there is a level of 'whoring' required, you need to ask people to link to you and ask them to tell there friends, also you would add people to your friends list in exchange for them adding to your.

The way I see it you have kind of outgrown it, I had a search through and I couldn't find any reputable doctors. It tend to be bands, comedies and wannabe playboy models.

We could limit it to just other Dr and professional within the business, but they are far and few between, most people are kids or computer nerds.

What I think would be more apporiate would be a professional online blog dedicated to you and your work. Here is a example I picked out, they look a lot more professional: http://www.drpetra.co.uk/blog/

Also I think at some junction after we have build this up, we can look at getting you a page in wikipedia, which is becoming the world standard encyclopedia, this has a lot of kudos. Here is the example of someones, entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine_Dolce

I am already working on a number of things along these line, but I have always been careful to keep everything one step removed from you so that it doesn't damage your brand.

Text link selling, has it had it's day.

New Changes are alway being put in googles algorithm. So what can webmaster selling links do?

There are some things that reduce the risk the link would even get identified, like remove any sponsored links' or advertisements' captions that are next ot the links. Another idea is to put the link within a paragraph or within the navigation, at least ry to avoid sticking them in a easily identifiy able chunk.

It is very hard to figure out the return on investiment with links, When buy links for SE ranking I don't like to pay monthly. So you compose a article then place a link to your website at the bottom and then nice friendly webmasters put it on thier website for all their visitors to see. So you get one-way inbound links on a relevant page, but you get to plug your site for free on someone else site.

Which sounds perfect what with the constant rumours about reciprocal linking being dead.

But I'm not so convinced, this is the new holy grail of internet marketing. Article marketing in my opinion is very hard work.

For example how easy would it be to get inbound links to help you in the search engines. The main issue you have here is the search engines duplicate filter, because because the same article is offered to anyone who wants it it is pretty much guaranteed to flag up as a duplicate, so even if your article gets published on 100 websites, only one will count and they might not even use your link.

So you could up writing ten articles and only ever get back one link.

"But what about all the traffic the article will generate?" I hear you say! Well yes maybe. To persuade site to publish your articles they have to be done in a certain way. The main reason why writers don't get their articles published is because they write advertisements, they just write article selling their product or service. Webmaster rarely want to put these adverts on their site for free. To get them published their needs to be something in it for the website that are published. However if you write a article that primary function is to give useful information or to entertain, then if probable won't be that effective to draw people to your website.

Website owners will be reluctant to publish anythign that will send people away.

I recone 3 month from now, most people will have got sick of writing articles after getting next to no results.
I know you've all been waiting for the groovy sites I have been looking at. Here's a forum I have been hanging around in. The thread went on for days continuously covering the same points mainly because chrishirst was wrong and refused to be beaten by a newbi, upstart like myself. He was very invested in the point that:

PageRank doesn't;
leak, drain, bleed , dissipate, evaporate, leech or is otherwise reduced by out going links.

If you read the thread here, you can see why I didn't want to quit. The conversation is bizarre, even though I (nixies@yahoo.co) had all the proof and experts backing me up he still refused to admit that thier maybe the smallest chance that the employee at google may be clever than him.

The debate was completely ground to a halt because; He could not get his head around how the equation only looked at incoming links how the outgoing links could reduce the amount of Page Rank you have.

We stood our ground for quite a while, I tried to exaplin the way the equation worked.

I have now word out that it is very hard to understand the equation unless you understand these points about how google calulates page rank:

The green bar shown on the toolbar is just a label given to a page depending on the group that the actual page rank falls into.

The calculation is done for each individual page not site.

The equation is repeated multiple times.

Each time the calculation is done it is done from scratch; no prior Page rank is worked in the equation.

This is how it can be though about. Bear in mind this is a simplification (and if you want to go into specific details it is wrong).

Each page indexed by google is given a value of one; part of this value is given as a vote which is divided between all of the pages that it links to. So that gives you a new value. This bit everyone agrees on, pagerank is made up of vote from your inbound links.

However this is where people get lost, the calculation is then repeated starting with the new values, so the pervious pagerank that has been gain on pervious calulation can be passed on. The equation is done over and over again. So because your vote is devided between the pages that you have links to, if you link to pages that are voting for you then in the next calculation (vote) you are going to end up with more page rank than if you would have linked to a lot of pages that do not link back to you.

So that is the main point if you link out of your own website, to a site that does not link back. The vote is not going to come back to you so you are going to lose/drain/leak page rank.

What effect page rank has on how well your site is ranked? Well that is a completely different question.

What about various new sites I found by reading other blogs.
